Spring Break Activities for Cadets While at Home

Just three weeks away (March 13-21), Spring Break is a time we encourage our parents to schedule an activity or multiple activities that might be more engaging for a young cadet rather than spending all his time playing X-box, Play Station, or the Nintendo Wii. Although the best opportunities require a little effort on the part of parents to organize something meaningful, the added benefits far exceed simply occupying his time and works to enhance his resume. We make note of this upcoming opportunity because volunteering (or working) during Spring Break can play a pivotal role in the development of each cadet.

Some of our cadets have found ground-breaking enthusiasm towards their Spring Break experiences. In the past we’ve had cadets that volunteered at veterinary hospitals love their experiences so much they decided to return over the following summer, and then further their education in biology and veterinary medicine in college and beyond. College admission at a great school is difficult and any resume enhancer that can be added pre-application is strongly encouraged.

A number of parents elect to schedule volunteer opportunities at local non-profits like Habitat for Humanity, local food banks, and SPCA locations. Parents can inquire about menial jobs at their work place which would require little supervision.  We ask our parents to consider paying their son for engaging in these great opportunities. Over the years we’ve realized that quite simply, money talks, and that the experience is better for both the cadet and the institution if they can consider it a job.

Fishburne will award tour credits and merits for this as well as community service hours.

Without a doubt, the primary goal is to keep our cadets active in the learning process and under adult supervision during Spring Break so that parents can concentrate on work. There are so many wonderful non-profits in every community that desperately need able-bodied help. Some of these organizations have captivating missions that are truly inspirational.

Thank you!
