Fresh off of the STEM
Fishburne Cadets conduct experiments with Hydroponics and Hydrogen Fuel Cells as part of the school’s STEM initiative.
Waynesboro, VA — Cadets in CPT Galloway’s science class at Fishburne Military School had something special cooking up this semester; and, today, they were able share the harvest with the school Superintendent.
Early in the semester the Cadets assembled a hydroponic growing station and began growing a variety of different seeds. Now, as graduation draws near, they are boasting a bumper crop of borage, arugula, lettuce, snap peas, basil, and grape tomatoes.
To celebrate their success, Cadets Preston Scantlebury (Silver Spring, MD) and Robert Goetz (Blacksburg, VA) decided that they would surprise COL Morrison with a fresh salad and demonstration of their hydrogen power cell.

successfully capture Hydrogen gas in a fuel cell they’ve constructed and then used that fuel cell to power a spinning motor.
The Cadets used solar panels to produce enough energy to split water molecules into Hydrogen and Oxygen, capturing the Hydrogen in order to propel their motor. Over an hour later their motor was still spinning.

“This is truly amazing to me,” noted COL Morrison, between bites, “these young men are exploring ideas and utilizing equipment that I didn’t even have access to in college. Thanks to faculty like Captain Galloway, Fishburne’s young men are leaving this campus better prepared than ever for college…and to be life-long lovers of learning.”
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
