Fishburne is almost set to make its second appearance in the Capital Area Football Conference Championship game after downing Fredericksburg Christian 42-25 on Friday afternoon.

The win ties the Eagles and Caissons for second with one loss in the conference each, but Fishburne holds the tiebreaker. Next week, Fredericksburg will play at No. 1 Massanutten. If the Eagles fall to MMA, Fishburne will clinch the No. 2 spot and earn a spot in the title game. If the Eagles win, there will be a three-way tie for first.

The tiebreaker will be decided by point differential. If the Eagles beat MMA by more than eight points, Fishburne will be knocked out of the title game.

“Hopefully we are continuing to build, working on each year and improving the attitudes of the players,” said Fishburne coach Val Gochenour. “This year we have a team, that’s it, we have a team.”

Fishburne’s run and passing games complimented a strong day on defense against the Eagles on Friday afternoon.

After receiving the kickoff, the Eagles only ran three plays before Fishburne’s Andre Truesdell intercepted a Jonathan Whelan pass and ran it into the end zone for a 40-yard interception return.

After spending almost half of the first quarter on the field, the Fishburne defense stepped up again, stopping the Eagles offense on their own 35-yard line on third-down.

Truesdell stepped up again, this time on offense, to score on a two-yard scamper to put Fishburne up 13-0 after the extra point sailed wide.

Berry connected on his first of two touchdown passes to start the second quarter on a nine-yard pass to tight end David Candelario.

“I was a little inaccurate but my receivers made plays,” Berry said. “They got open really easy and made it easy on me.”

The eagles finally got on the board on an eight-minute drive that spanned 68 yards. Neither team found the end zone again for the rest of the half and Fishburne took a 20-6 lead into the locker room.

After Truesdell scored to open the second half, Berry threw his longest pass of the night, connecting with Candelario on an 80-yard touchdown pass putting Fishburne up 34-6.

The Caisson’s defense didn’t allow the Eagles offense to move at all on the next drive, and during the punt, the snap was high forcing the Eagles’ punter to run into the end zone for a safety.

Truesdell added one more score for Fishburne, a 51-yard run to end the third quarter to put Fishburne up for good.

The Caissons will play their final game of the regular season on Oct. 30, hosting John Paul the Great.
