FMS rallies, knocks off Southern Tech, 80-71
Southern Tech led by 16 points with 9:10 to go, but Fishburne had an answer.
The Caisson postgrads held Southern Tech to five points the rest of the way, and took the lead for good on a Jackson Trapp three-pointer with 1:22 to go en route to posting an improbable 80-71 win Friday night on the opening night of the Fishburne Caisson PG Classic.
Tech led by as many as 12 points in the first half before FMS (23-8) rallied in the late stages to take a 38-37 lead at the break on a jumper from the left corner by Trapp just before the buzzer. It remained close in the second half until an 18-3 Southern Tech run opened up a 66-50 lead at the 9:10 mark.
The Caissons fought all the way back to a 69-69 tie with 1:55 left on a jumper from the right corner by Karl Ziegler. Trapp nailed a three from just to the left of the top of the key to break the tie. A pair of free throws by Donald Tention with 1:10 left made it 72-71 FMS, and Fishburne responded with 53.8 seconds left with a three-point play by Spencer Parker.
Khalil Alford stole an entry pass on the next Tech possession and made one of two free throws after being fouled. A long three from Tention missed the mark seconds later, and Parker drained two free throws with 22.2 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
Chris Bryant led all scorers with 26 points. Trapp added 20 for the Caissons, who will host NIA Prep in their season finale on Saturday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m.
