FMS Honors Winter Athletes

IMG_5963Athletes, Coaches, Faculty, Staff and some parents came together last night to honor Fishburne Military School’s winter athletes with a special awards presentation and banquet. Swimmers, Basketball players and Wrestlers all gathered in the Fishburne chapel as each sport’s coach rose to recognize the accomplishments of their teams and individual, stand-out athletes.

COL Gary Morrison (VA), FMS Superintendent and MSgt Mike Anson USAF(ret) took turns addressing the collected athletes and highlighting the often record-breaking accomplishments of the 2012-2013 Winter sports seasons.

“If I had to choose one word to sum up this winter sports season, it would be: HEART. The athletes of theIMG_5981 2012-2013 winter seasons have battled and forged a place for themselves in Fishburne history, in many cases setting new records that will stand for many years to come. Congratulations to each and every one of you. You have done yourselves, your families, and your school proud.”

The final and most prestigious award was given in honor of Colonel James G. Hogg.  COL Hogg was athletic director, coach, and teacher at Massanutten Military Academy, Fishburne Military School, and Augusta Military Academy. He was an honors graduate of Davidson College, home of the Wildcats, a division 1 school, where he was a scholar-athlete. At Fishburne, Colonel Hogg was assistant headmaster and athletic director.  IMG_5995He dedicated most of his life to helping boys make the transition to becoming young men of character.  The Hogg Award is presented three times per year to the cadet-athlete that best embodies the ideals of athletic and academic excellence.  A plaque in the foyer permanently displays the names of recipients.

Cadet Captain Novak Porter was presented with the Hogg Award for his outstanding contributions to the wrestling season as well as his dedication to academic excellence. Porter, a senior from Silver Spring, Maryland and Commander of Alpha Company will be attending the United States Naval Academy in the fall.
