FMS grapplers compete at LCA
The Fishburne Military School wrestling team took one of three matches in a tri meet with Lynchburg Christian, Hargrave and Virginia Episcopal School on Tuesday.
The Caissons knocked off VES by a 36-24 final score while falling to Hargrave 54-18 and losing to the #1-ranked LCA by a 68-12 final.
FMS is now 10-5 on the season.
Highlights of the night on the mat:
– Kyle Harvey took two of three matches tonight with his only loss to HMA. He won by pin over the LCA wrestler and for the first time in his five seasons at FMS pulled off a win over an LCA wrestler. This win also put Harvey in the driver’s seat for at least the #2 seed at the VIC Championships.
– Steve Woolley took out the wrestlers from HMA and VES, then had to face #1-ranked Marcus Miller from LCA, who has just moved up to 152 pounds. Miller is a returning state champion and a Prep School All-American and is 44-0 this season. Woolley gave a great effort in a loss in this match and now is all but assured the # 2 seed at the VIC Championships unless Miller moves back down to 145, and in that case Woolley will be a lock for the #1 seed.
– Novak Porter faced two of the top eight wrestlers in the state at his weight and also had to face a very tough VES wrestler. His losses to the top kids did not stop him from fighting hard against the VES wrestler and doing so for the full six minutes as he scored a takedown with just two seconds to go in the match to pull off the victory 5-4. Trailing 4-3 with seconds to go, he gave an outstanding effort right up to the final buzzer and pulling out a big win for the team and himself.
