FMS Government Classes Getting Hands-on Civics Lesson

Fishburne Cadets Serve As Election Pages, Learn Civics from Front Row

Waynesboro, VA — Twenty-three Fishburne Military School Cadets will be doing their part to serve the community on election day this year, and will be getting a first-hand civics lesson that they will not soon forget. The Cadets, all studying Government this year, will act as Election Pages in Waynesboro on November 7th.

The group met this morning with Waynesboro Registrar, Lisa Jeffers, and the Vice-Chairman of the Electoral Board, Robert Horowitz, for the first of their training sessions in preparation for Election Day.

As Election Pages, the Cadets will assist electoral officers at their respective polling stations, help to greet and orient voters, and aid anyone needing assistance at the polling places. The Cadets will work in two shifts throughout Election Day. Last year, Cadets were on station at the Waynesboro Public Library at 5:45am and worked in shifts for thirteen hours passing out voting instruction flyers and “I Voted” stickers as well as helping to organize the curbside lines and keep the polling place tidy.

“This is an outstanding opportunity for our young men to serve the community while learning some valuable, first-hand lessons about real-world civics,” noted FMS Instructor, Chief Warrant Officer Phillip Lacey. Lacey, who teaches Government and History at Fishburne, began the Election Pages program at FMS as a way for his students to learn about the electoral process from a different perspective.

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
