FMS competes in first drill meet of 2011-2012 school year

On Dec. 10, the Fishburne Military School drill teams competed in the year’s very first drill meet hosted at the Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth.

The cadets awoke at 0400 and traveled three hours to the destination, catching up on their sleep along the way. After the long drive the Regulation drill team was required to compete almost immediately.

The Regulation drill team competed in:

  • Unarmed squad drill
  • Unarmed platoon drill
  • Armed squad drill
  • Armed platoon drill
  • Unarmed inspection

The team placed third for unarmed inspection. They did very well overall and won a trophy. The Regulation drill team wore tunics mostly for the competition and wore white over grey for inspection including all the awards the cadets had earned.

The Exhibition drill team competed in:

  • Armed Exhibition squad
  • Armed Exhibition platoon

The Exhibition squad placed second place for their spectacular performance and the platoon drill team received third. The Exhibition drill team performed admirably and won two trophies. The Exhibition drill team wore the United States Army dress blue uniform and were the only cadets at the drill meet to do so.

The Fishburne Military School Color Guard competed and won second place in their presentation of the colors. They were the only representatives in traditional cadet grey coatee uniform.

After the presentation of the awards, parents of the cadets said goodbye to one another and departed knowing that in six days their cadets would return home for Christmas vacation.

The next drill meet will be Feb. 4, 2012 at Liberty High School in Bealeton.
