Fishburne wrestlers find a groove at the Bull Dog Invitational (Jan. 8-9)
The Caisson wrestling team headed down to Lynchburg over the weekend to take part in the 31st Annual Bull Dog Invitational. Our squad was matched up against wrestlers from other public and private schools of various size and strength. Although we are still young, growing, and learning, I believe this team is “for real.”
We started the weekend trip with a bit of a lesson… A few of our guys (2) had a tough time controlling their weight over the holidays and had to stay back at FMS. Three others boarded the bus knowing they were going to be a very close call on the scale when the weigh-in started. I was pleased that everyone who went to the Bull Dog Invitation managed to make their weight class and hit the mat. At the end of day on Friday, seven of the twelve were still standing and moving on to compete on Saturday.
After a short night sleep it was back to the mat. First, however, we had to beat the scale again. Unfortunately, one of our remaining seven wrestlers missed his weigh-in by a .2 pound margin and had to forfeit out of the tournament. Three of the remaining six wrestlers succeeded in moving into the medal round. The Caissons did an outstanding job finishing in 12th place out of 19 teams. While this might not sound impressive below are the numbers.
Total teams: 19
Private schools: 12
Public schools: 7
VIC Member teams: 8
So what does this mean…?
Overall we finished 12th, but 5th against just private schools, and when matched-up against VIC member teams, the Caissons finished 3rd.
Without a doubt the Caissons are headed in the right direction!
