Fishburne Welcomes Another Local Legend to its Coaching Staff
Fishburne Military School Names New Head Football Coach
Waynesboro, VA — After the addition of Chip Hill and Terry Waters in 2015, Fishburne Military School’s Athletic Department is proud to announce the addition of Coach Tom Goforth as the school’s new head football coach.
Coach Goforth has been a high school football coach in Virginia for the past 37 years and will continue his career by leading the Caissons in 2018. Coach Goforth is best known for his tenure at Stuarts Draft High School where he served from 1990-2013. After a stop at Riverheads High School to help point that school’s football program in the right direction, Coach Goforth has been essential to the improvement at Waynesboro High School since 2014.
Coach Goforth’s list of accomplishments as a coach and educator is extensive and is highlighted by a State Championship at Tazewell High School in 1986, two district championships at Stuarts Draft in 1995 and 1996, 5 straight VHSL playoff appearances with SDHS from 2007-2012. 3 straight VHSL playoff appearances with WHS from 2014-2016 including a Final Eight birth in 2014, a state semifinal appearance with Riverheads in 2013, two different coach of the year awards in 1995 and 1997, 5 different recognitions as a teacher, and is a inaugural member of the SDHS Sports Hall of Fame.
Chip Hill, who has led Fishburne’s football program since 2015, will devote his time to leading the school’s academic department after being named Headmaster last summer. Coach Hill lead the Caissons to a Conference Championship in 2015 and coached 8 all-state athletes in his time as head coach.
The first game of the “Goforth Era” will be August 31 at Roanoke Catholic School. The Caissons’ first home game will be September 28 against Randolph-Macon.
Coach Goforth was introduced to the cadets and addressed the corps today during an assembly in Lawton Chapel.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
