Fishburne Swimmers Heating Up For State Tourney
Report from Coach Gray:
Tuesday night our swimmers put on an excellent show, scoring more points at this meet than we have in the past 7 years and placing higher than we ever have before.
200 Medley Relay: McKinley Duffer, John Hutchison, Josh Draper and Colin Green had their best swim of the year and the relay dropped over 7 seconds, coming in second. This is the relay that will be swimming in the state championship meet next week.
200 Free: Devin Soulsby dropped one second coming in 14th out 23.
200 IM: This was a face-off between McKinley Duffer and Hargrave’s best swimmer. They were neck and neck with McKinley in the lead through the first 3 legs. But then McKinley lost his steam and fell behind in the final freestyle leg. McKinley ended up in third place (as a swimmer in a previous heat took first place), but dropped a second from his time, breaking the school record that he held.
50 Free: Both Royce Pinner and JinWoo Lee had lifetime bests. Pinner dropped almost a half a second! Pinner placing 13th out of 26 and Lee placing 14th.
100 Fly: Josh Draper who had missed a lot of the season and only really gotten back in the pool a bit over a week ago, swam an amazing 100 fly coming in 5th place but only 4 hundreths of a second behind 4th place. Because Josh had not swum this event this season he was put in the first and slowest heat which put him at a disadvantage to begin with, but he gave it his all and we watched the 2nd and 3rd heats go by eagerly trying to figure out
100 Free: JinWoo Lee put in another lifetime best and almost broke one minute. He came in 14th out of 24.
500 Free: We didn’t place high, but we dropped some significant time. Devin Soulsby dropped 5 seconds placing 12th out of 14 and Logan Amico dropped 13 seconds placing 13th.
200 Free Relay: Our A relay (McKinley Duffer, JinWoo Lee, Colin Green and Josh Draper) came within half a second of qualifying for states but just didn’t quite make it. They did however break the school record that had been set by the ’08 team.
100 Back: McKinley Duffer faced off with the same swimmer from Hargrave. McKinely was in the lead in the first 50 but fell behind a bit in the second 50 and the finish was too close to call. The times on the board said that McKinley got first, but it had looked like he got second. When the final times came out he had gotten 2nd by .7 seconds. Colin Green had a lifetime best and came in 4th. It was a spectacular event!
100 Breast: John Hutchison dropped 1.2 seconds placing 10th out of 22 and Craig White dropped half a second placing 17th.
400 Free Relay: Colin Green, John Hutchison, Devin Soulsby and Josh Draper broke the school record by over 2 seconds and came in 4th.
All around it was a spectacular performance.
Final Scores: Hargrave 121, Covenant 104, Roanoke Catholic 71, North Cross 66, Fishburne 52, Liberty Christian 49, Virginia Episcopal School 49.
