Fishburne overcomes sluggish start, handles Rise Academy, 99-72
After Wednesday’s 109-102 win over #3 Hargrave, it was understandable that #4 Fishburne might come out of the gates with a Hargrave hangover two nights later against a team that it had beaten by 39 points earlier in the season.
That didn’t make the first eight minutes – which featured one, count ’em, one, FMS field goal and a 2-for-6 performance at the foul line – any more palatable.
“We just came out flat,” said Caissons coach Ed Huckaby, whose team took control with a 27-3 first-half run en route to what turned out to be an easy 99-72 win Friday night in the opener of the FMS Enterprise Car Rental Classic.
A flurry of threes from Zack Kirkbride and Will Darley (Maryland-Baltimore County) and back-to-back dunks by Barnett Harris (Delaware) fueled the extended run that put Fishburne (20-5) up 46-24 at the break.
The second half was more of the same for FMS, with Kuran Iverson (Memphis) taking the reins for a long stretch, scoring 17 straight points on a mix of post moves, slams and a three-pointer.
“I felt like we needed a spark, so I stepped up and took control there for a while,” said Iverson.
