Fishburne Military School XC Takes 7th in Virginia
Recap by Coach Woods
On Friday at the Virginia Independent Schools State Cross Country Championship at Woodberry Forest, the Caisson Cross Country team finished 7th out of 31 teams at the state championship. In a huge field of 272 runners, the Caissons managed to group up to secure its best placing at states in school history.
The Caissons were paced by Senior Hunter Jennings whom finished in 18th place in 18:51, earning All-State honors. Senior James Wright finished 31st in 19:17 and Sophomore Solomon Adams right behind in 32nd in 19:18. Senior Logan Amico came across the line in 81st place in 20:14 and Sophomore Doug Marsh in 20:36 in 95th place.
Junior Thomas Cantwell capped off the season with his personal record best of 21:41 (-0:02).
It was an exciting and an intense race to watch, so hats off to our athletes. Unfortunately, due to poor oversight with fans blocking the correct route of the first loop and no cart to lead the Division 2 runners as a cart did for the Division 1 race, the top pack of 15 runners made an incorrect turn. This mistake affected Hunter Jennings who followed the lead pack while in 8th place. Hunter showed his resilient nature, though, and made up ground from 24th (after the wrong turn) to finish in 18th place and earn All-State honors.
Fishburne successfully exacted a little revenge against VIC foes Roanoke Catholic, Miller School, and Eastern Mennonite who had beaten the senior-less Caissons at the conference meet two weeks prior. The Caissons may have even been the top-performing VIC school, if not for an unfortunate overlook of crowd control.
This has been a fantastic cross country season. Coach Tankard and I were fortunate to have a great group of fine, young men who would push through the pain and the discomfort at practice in order to reach their full potential.
We thank the Caisson Nation for its support and hope we have etched a new tradition of success in the annals of Fishburne.
Roll, Caissons!
