Monday was Senior night for FMS Wrestling as the Caissons wrapped up the regular season at home for a change. Fishburne took on Cross County rivals Grace Christian, Randolph Macon Academy, and then closed the night out wrestling Massanutten Academy.
The opening round would see the Caissons take on Grace Christian in a tough match, as Grace may not fill all the weigh classes but the ones they do fill are all tough kids. When the round was over the Caissons would take home the Victory by the score of 66-17.
In round 2 the Caissons would take on rival military school Randolph Macon Academy, The Caissons got a slow start but then put their foot on the gas as they pulled away and never looked back, winning by the score of 72-12.
In the final round the Caissons would change uniforms and put on the Diggies for the first time this season in a dual match…and it ,of course, would have to do with wrestling one of the school’s oldest rivals, Massanutten Academy. This time the Caissons did not get a slow start. They put their foot down early and hard. Starting off with James Wright coming from behind to secure a pin in his match. After that it was Caisson after Caisson getting their hand raised in victory, finally closing out the match with a team score of FMS 75 MMA 3.
With the regular season over, I look back and have to pat these young men on the back. As the entire season was a juggling act for this team…dealing with injury after injury to starters. So many different young men stepped up at different times to fill the line up for the Caissons! Also looking at this line up, and only normally starting 2 to 3 Seniors, it’s a very young team. The team will start 4 seniors in the post season, starting with the VIC Championship on Saturday 14 Feb.
FMS had a nice run for the past 3 seasons; but with 10 seniors in last year’s line up (14 weight classes total), many said would take a major rebuilding to maintain success. The truth is that this team is finding its stride and just finished the regular season with a Record of 18-5.
Historical note —
The Caissons have looked dominant for 5 of the previous 6 seasons:
2009/10: 9-0
2011/12: 13-5
2012/13: 20-4
2013/14: 18-2
2014/15 18-5
Next up the VIC Championship Tournament on 14 February, being held at The Covenant School! Roll Caissons!
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
