Corps Leadership Comes Together
Waynesboro, VA — They returned to barracks on Friday, got their things squared away and, by early Saturday morning, got down to the business of preparing to lead the Corps of Cadets at Fishburne Military School for the 2015-2016 school year. Officially, the program which began this weekend is called the Cadet Leadership Training Program, but old men and Alumni refer to it simply as TD (training detail) Week. This is the week when rising leaders at Fishburne sharpen and demonstrate their skills before taking on the responsibilities of training, motivating and leading a remarkably diverse Corps of Cadets.
It’s a jam-packed week for these young men, but there is a lot more to becoming a leader at FMS than shining shoes and doing push-ups.
As an Honor Unit with Distinction within the US Army Cadet Command’s 4th Brigade, Fishburne Military School has a long and proud
tradition of military and leadership excellence to uphold. This is not lost on the TD Week Cadets as they work to master: Drill and Ceremony; Formal Etiquette, FMS History and Traditions; Military Protocol; as well as FMS and JROTC Regulations and Standards. The Training Detail will also hear a number of presentations from FMS Trustees (including a lesson on FMS History and Traditions given by J.B. Yount III, Esq., FMS Class of 1956 and Chairman of the Fishburne-Hudgins Educational Foundation, Inc.).
“Fishburne Military School,” explains Superintendent COL Gary Morrison (VA), a 1981 graduate, “embraces a whole-man approach to leadership training that has been proven and effective for generations. Our young men develop their leadership skills atop a solid foundation of personal pride and personal responsibility. What this week really does is help Cadets to hone their own leadership styles and also add some new techniques to their skill-set.”
A total of fifty-six Cadets are currently in the middle of sharpening those skills and the results are already beginning to shine through.
“This is a very dynamic group. I think we’re going to have a very successful Leadership Team this year,” notes Fishburne’s Senior Army Instructor, LTC Robert A. Hunt, USA(Ret). “These young men are showing enthusiasm, motivation, teamwork, and high levels of competence. I feel extremely good about the upcoming year. The Corps is going to be is very capable hands.”
On Wednesday afternoon Cadet Leadership positions will be announced. During a special formation, the Senior Army Instructor will announce the Battalion Commander, Executive Officer and Company Commanders for 2015-2016.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
