Fishburne Military School Named to Top Schools List
Waynesboro, VA – For the fourth consecutive year, Fishburne Military School has been named to the annual Top High Schools and Colleges list by Virginia Living magazine.
This year, FMS can thank its State Champion Rifle Team for pushing the school over the top and into the 2016 Top Schools list. In previous years, Fishburne Military School has been recognized in the Top High Schools list for capital improvements to provide a better classroom experience for its students as well as for its ongoing STEM initiatives.
“We’ve done a little research,” notes Fishburne Military School’s Superintendent, retired Navy Captain Mark E. Black, “and found that of the 966 high schools and 77 colleges in the state of Virginia, only 150 programs were selected for this list. We are all incredibly proud and blessed to be part of a school as special as Fishburne Military School.”
James Abbott Fishburne is often quoted as saying: “It is my purpose to have here an institution which shall rank as first class in everything that constitutes true worth, and from which shall go forth loyal, earnest, industrious boys and young men, well equipped for the duties and responsibilities of life, and above all else, to maintain a high standard of honor and integrity in the Corps of Cadets.”
“The Founder would be pleased to know,” adds FMS Communications Director, Chris Richmond, “that his little school is still fulfilling his initial purpose over 137 years later.”
This special bound-in supplement to Virginia Living’s September/October 2016 issue, Virginia Living State of Education which celebrates excellence and innovation in Virginia’s high schools and colleges will hit newsstands across the country this week.
Virginia Living’s Top High Schools & Colleges 2016 recognizes schools for their excellence and innovation in five categories: Arts & Humanities, Science, Math & Technology, Research Opportunities & Mentorships, Athletics and Capital Improvements. After careful and thorough review of each school’s programs and accomplishments, Virginia Living’s editors selected schools that have instituted programs or recently begun capital improvements aimed at strengthening students’ experience in the classroom, on the field and in their communities.
From large public research universities to two-year colleges and small private liberal arts colleges, and from public school systems to private boarding schools and special needs schools, Virginia Living’s Top High Schools & Colleges 2016 is the resource for anyone interested in knowing why Virginia’s schools are consistently ranked among the country’s best.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
