Fishburne Military School Key Club Supports Kite Day
Fishburne Key Club Helps Waynesboro Parks and Recreation Dept. Bring Colorful Fun to Area Kids
Waynesboro, VA — The Fishburne Military School Key Club along with Waynesboro High School Key Club turned out in support of the annual City of Waynesboro Kite Day, held on Saturday, Sept 30 at Corner Springs Park.
Sixteen FMS Key Club members assisted with helping children prepare and fly paper kites. They were busy from 9:30 am until 3:00 pm, non-stop, making paper kites and instructing the children on how to fly them. The annual event has been a Waynesboro favorite since its inception in 2006.
Mrs. Kathy Berrang, Fishburne Military School’s Student Services Coordinator and Key Club sponsor oversaw a group of Cadet volunteers and noted that “The Cadets assembled and handed out paper kites to kids, explaining how to decorate them and giving them tips on how to fly them…our boys were so good with the small children. It was a very windy day, great for flying kites!”.
The Fishburne Key Club members also got in on the action with the big kites races. Cadet James Gallagher of Copiague,NY, flew to the finish line ahead of the others.
The Fishburne Military School Key Club lends their effort throughout the year to various city-sponsored events such as Kite Day, Fall Foliage Festival, the Halloween Costume Contest, and the Tour de Valley bicycling event.

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
