Fishburne Military School Hosts VIC Wrestling Tourney, Takes 2nd Overall
The Fishburne Military School Caissons Wrestling Team hosted the 2014 VIC Championships today and the gym was a HOTBED of action. Competing were Blue Ridge School, Covenant, FMS, Hargrave, Liberty Christian Academy (LCA), The Miller School, Roanoke Catholic, and Virginia Episcopal School (VES).
Going into the tournament, LCA was the 7-time VIC defending Champions as well as the Defending Team State Champions. The Caissons did a little juggling act as they moved kids around in weight classes to help the team in its effort to take down the big dogs of LCA. Not only did some Caissons have to move UP a weight class, they also had to do so and give up weight so they could get back done next weekend, under the National Weight loss system, and be back at the “normal” weight class for the State Championships.
This marked the first time in 12 years the Caissons had hosted the Conference Championships and the Alumni Memorial Gymnasium was booming. The day was dominated primarily by three schools, LCA, FMS and Roanoke Catholic. It was the Caissons and the Bulldogs, however, that pulled far beyond the rest of the pack.
LCA claimed an impressive 3 champions, 5 runners-up and 2 3rd place finishers. The Bulldogs’ led Fishburne by over 20 points going into the championship rounds and managed to hold on against an onslaught of scoring.
Overall, Fishburne would rack up 5 championships, 1 runner-up and 4 3rd place finishers. Despite claiming the majority of championships, the Caissons were never able to close the gap in team points.
Here’s how the scoring progressed: (Coach’s recap)
At 106. Nicholas Lagasse would make his first start for the Caissons and finish in 4th place for the team.
113: Joseph Baan had a tough early match and finished in 3rd place for the Caissons
120: Anders Lenardson turned it on once again as he pinned his way to the finals and then pinned again in the finals to become the first VIC Champion for the Caissons on the day. (Also the first Caissons Champion since Kyle Harvey 2 years ago)
126: Brian, The Birthday Boy, Farrell walked to the finals winning by pin and in the finals took on an LCA wrestler in a KEY Match up. and what happened? Farrell Champion #2 on the day.
132: Jacob Cochran gave up a LOT of weight to help with the line up juggle and finished in 3rd Place on the day.
138: Bevan “Biggie” Morrison-Rogers moved up a weight class and finished the day in 3rd place.
145: Daniel May again moved up a weight class to help the team and ended the day as the VIC Champion at that weight.
152: Andrew Davis, again another wrester moving up a weight to help the team ended the day at the VIC Champion
160: Chandler Wright did a great job and lost in the Consolation Finals in Overtime and finished the day in 4th Place.
170: Kyle Hale in one of the toughest weight classes finished the day in 3rd Place.
182: Drake Hansen had another great day as he has really turned it on this season and at the end of the day was the VIC Champion at this weight class.
195: Jair Oglivie did a great job and finished the day in 4th place.
220: This one was special. The TEAM asked Calab Taylor to move WAY up and fill an empty spot in the line up. He agreed to do so and at 7:00am was too light so started drinking water to get his weight up. (yes, our weight control program is that tight). Taylor had a great day supporting the TEAM and finished in 4th place.
285: Mark Bou Shebel did a good job for the Team and finished the day at the VIC Runner-up, losing in the finals.
So, if your counting, that’s 14 of 14 in the top 4 spots. Yes, that’s even better then last year’s 13 of 14!
So, then it was on to the FINAL team scores as FMS had been slowly closing the gap all day long.
