Fishburne Military School Honors Winter Athletes

IMG_2828Fishburne Military School held its annual Winter Sports Awards Presentation and Banquet last night, beginning with Awards Presentations for each team in Lawton Chapel.  FMS Athletics Director, Msgt Mike Anson led off the events by addressing the assembled athletes. “Congratulations to all of you,” he announced, “for completing your seasons in good standing with your teams.  The purpose of this sports banquet is to recognize those who stuck with their teams and refused to quit, and the refusal to quit is a characteristic we should all respect.”

There was a great deal to celebrate about the Winter Athletics season at Fishburne, as Anson noted.

“The rifle team grew tremendously throughout the year, with scores going up every week and the team doing their best shooting at the end of the year, making them competitive at the state level. JV basketball was one win away from making the conference tournament, and I believe they will get there next year.  The varsity basketball team came up just a bit short in some tough losses at the end of the season.  Regardless, over the past ten years of our Caissons Classic Basketball Tournament, we won for only the second time, and for that we will update the banner in the gym. The swim team’s season looked promising, with two wins at the Randolph-Macon swim meet, but through no fault of the swimmers, the season ended much too early. The wrestling team had yet another historic season, with a second place finish in the conference, sixth place in the state, and four wrestlers going to the nationals.  In addition to numerous medal winners, a truly remarkable accomplishment”.

“And let’s not forget the coaches,” Anson went on, “Coaches do a lot more than simply run practices and coach at games.  They have a host of seemingly never-IMG_2849ending issues to deal with, like updating rosters, transportation, meals, equipment, uniforms, coordination of everything, and so on.  I hope you agree with me we have outstanding coaches.”

Each Coach, in turn, called their team up before the Corps and recognized individual award winners.  The final and most prestigious award was given in honor of Colonel James G. Hogg.  COL Hogg was athletic director, coach, and teacher at Massanutten Military Academy, Fishburne Military School, and Augusta Military Academy. He was an honors graduate of Davidson College, North Carolina, home of the Wildcats, a division 1 school, where he was a scholar-athlete. At Fishburne, Colonel Hogg was assistant headmaster and athletic director.  He dedicated most of his life toward helping boys make the transition to becoming young men with a sense of character and honor.  The Hogg Award is presented three times per year to the cadet-athlete that best embodies the ideals of athletic and academic excellence.  A plaque in the foyer permanently displays the names of recipients.

This season’s Hogg Award was presented to Cadet Captain Anders Lenardson by FMS Wrestling’s Coach Chiarolonzio.

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command. For more information visit
