Fishburne Honors Spring Athletes
Cadet Thomas Fosdick (Staunton, VA) receives the Spring James G. Hogg Award; Wrestling Coach Terry Waters named as Fishburne Military School Coach of the Year
Waynesboro, VA — Three times each school year the Fishburne Military School Caissons come together in Lawton Chapel to celebrate the successes of their athletic teams and to recognize individual efforts and achievements. The awards presentations are then followed by a special dinner prepared for the athletes.
Last night, Fishburne Military School’s Athletics Director, Major Brian Greene (VA), began the evening by noting: “The purpose of this banquet is to recognize those who stuck with their teams and refused to quit. The refusal to quit is a characteristic we should all respect.”
Greene went on to thank the Coaches, Faculty, Staff and Parents for their continued support throughout the year before turning the podium over to each Coach or Team Captain to present individual team awards (winners listed below).
At the conclusion of the team awards, Greene congratulated all 2016-2017 FMS athletes for retaining the Hogg Cup for another year through their combined efforts. “The James G. Hogg Cup” Greene explained, “is awarded every year to the school that wins the most Varsity match-ups between Military School rivals FMS and Massanutten. With wins in Football, Basketball, Wrestling, Rifle, and Lacrosse; it is clear that Fishburne will keep the cup for one more year. Of the Twelve years that this cup has been awarded, FMS has won it ten times.”
Greene, along with Assistant Headmaster (and former Athletics Director), MSG Mike Anson, presented FMS Wrestling Coach, Terry Waters, with The MSG Michael Anson Caissons Coach of the Year Award.
The final and most prestigious athletics award at FMS is given in honor of Colonel James G. Hogg. COL Hogg was an athletic director, coach, and teacher at Massanutten Military Academy, Fishburne Military School, and Augusta Military Academy. He was an honors graduate of Fishburne Military School and Davidson College, North Carolina, where he was a scholar-athlete for the Wildcats. At Fishburne, Colonel Hogg was assistant headmaster and athletic director. He dedicated most of his life toward helping boys make the transition to becoming young men with a sense of character and honor. The Hogg Award is presented three times per year to the cadet-athlete that best embodies the ideals of athletic and academic excellence. A plaque in the foyer permanently displays the names of recipients.
This season’s James G. Hogg award was presented to Thomas Fosdick.
Due to the ongoing conference semi-finals, the Baseball was unable to attend and their team awards will be announced at a later date.
