Fishburne Military School Cross Country Gears Up
Caissons Cross Country Focused on Season Opener
By Cadet Daniel May ’15, Battalion S-5
Fishburne Military School — While some athletes, in sports like Soccer and Football, do it for the money or the fame, there lies a breed of athlete that does it for nothing other than the love of the sport.
Cross Country requires a certain blend of mental toughness, dedication and athleticism that very few sports can match. Just ask FMS runner James Wright, “nothing compares to running, there are days when I feel dead after the third mile but I just push on because I know it will help me pass someone in a race.”
The ability to push physical limits is a common skill for FMS runners, one that coach Woods has helped to instill, “At cross country camp we really put in the work, doing two-a-days isn’t always fun but in order to get better you have to push past your comfort zone.”
Since Cross Country is a sport where the athletes do not directly compete against one another, Coach Woods is emphasizing personal development over results, “My goals for the season is for runners to continue to set personal records, I’d like for them to bring home medals but as they long as they peak at the end of the season I’ll be happy.” Success is not unfamiliar to Caisson runners as last season the team finished with a winning record and sent eight runners to the State tournament.
When asked about why people should be excited for Caissons Cross Country, coach Woods responded,” People should be excited for Caisson Cross Country this year because we have many talented athletes who have logged the miles and have made the commitment to push their own limits. Hopefully, the Caisson Nation can make it out to our home meet on October 14th at Coyner Springs Park to watch the cross country team in action. ROLL CAISSONS!”
The Caissons start the season at Blue Ridge School on September 20th, make sure to come out and support the boys if you are in the area.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command. For more information visit www.fishburne.org.
