Cadets Distinguish Themselves Academically
Headmaster Reports 76% of Corps Earned Honor Roll Status
Waynesboro, VA – The numbers are in and the Headmaster of Fishburne Military School, LTC Dan Baranik (VA), reports that just over 76% of the Corps of Cadets earned a place on the first semester’s Honor Rolls.
“This is a tremendous achievement for the Corps of Cadets and an incredible testament to the quality and dedication of our Faculty,” remarked FMS Superintendent, retired Navy Captain Mark E. Black. “Our young men had a very productive first semester and can hold their heads high. Now, our focus must be on making this second semester every bit as successful.”
According to a report issued in late January by the Headmaster’s office, 72 Caissons earned a place on the Honor Roll and an additional 40 Cadets earned a spot on the Distinguished Honor Roll. The Honor Rolls are published at the end of each marking period and at the conclusion of each semester at FMS. A Cadet must earn at least a 3.0 grade point average with no grade lower than a C in order to be placed on the Honor Roll. Distinguished Honor Roll students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average with no grade lower than a B.
“In the light of all the military and athletic accolades our young men earn each year, it is sometimes easy to miss noticing that Fishburne Cadets are working hard each and every day INSIDE the classroom as well. These young men and their instructors are making great strides academically and it is vitally important that we recognize their curricular victories as well as their extra-curricular triumphs,” Black concluded.
“It’s important to note,” explains FMS Admissions Director, Mr. Cedrick Broadhurst, “that our grading system is one of the toughest. A lot of high schools utilize a 10-point scale in which a grade of 90% would yield an A. Here, our instructors utilize a college-style grading scale where a student must earn a 94% to get an A. Such a high percentage of our Cadets earning a spot on the Honor Rolls really is an accomplishment of which they, and their teachers, can be particularly proud. We’re certainly all proud of them.”

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
