Fishburne Military School Boy Scout Troop Gives Back to Local First Responder

Waynesboro, VA — Fishburne Military School’s Boys Scout Troop #1879 embarked on a very special mission this weekend to bring aid to a local hero in need. When the boys got wind of the factFishburne Military School (Waynesboro, VA) Boy Scouts of America Troop 1879 that a local fire fighter who is battling cancer needed a hand they dispatched a team to provide some much needed assistance.

Seven members of the FMS Troop decided to pitch in by helping the area first-responder prepare for the winter. On Saturday the Cadets traveled to his home and spent the day chopping and stacking firewood.

The Boys Scouts of America Troop at Fishburne Military School was founded in order to add a very special component to the Cadets’ ongoing leadership training. Cadets in Fishburne’s BSA Troop #1879 learn valuable, life-long lessons including good citizenship, respect for our natural resources, outdoorsmanship, CPR and other life-saving skills. This weekend they took put those lessons into action.

Fishburne Military School (Waynesboro, VA) Boy Scouts of America Troop 1879Throughout the year the Troop takes on a number of community service and outreach programs in keeping with the BSA traditions and Fishburne’ Military School’s “Leadership for Life” concept. So far this fall the Troop has already completed training for the Cyber Chip Award which strives to teach families and volunteers how to keep young people safe on line. In addition, they are currently working on an Outdoor Ethics Award which includes Leave No Trace training.

The Fishburne Military School Boy Scout Troop consists of sixteen cadets, one of whom is an Eagle Scout who has now earned enough merit badges to receive a silver palm (this is the absolute highest award a scout can receive).


Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
