Fishburne Honors Fall Athletes
The Fishburne Military School Caissons gathered in Lawton Chapel last night to celebrate a record-setting Fall athletics season and to give out awards for excellence in Football, Soccer and Cross Country.
FMS Athletics Director, MSG Mike Anson, opened the festivities by highlighting the “stick-to-it-iveness” that has become a hallmark of Fishburne athletics. “Congratulate to all of you for finishing your season in good standing with your teams. There is a lot to be said for finishing; not everyone does it; you did,” Anson told the assembled athletes.
Anson went on to outline the accomplishments of, what all agree, has been an historic season. “Football, soccer, and cross country can all point to significant and in some cases historic accomplishments. Cross country sent 9 runners to the state meet, the most ever, and had wins over Massanutten (twice), Blue Ridge, and North Cross. Soccer had their best season in a decade and proved they could compete with the best teams in the state, sometimes beating them but always earning their respect. Football had a season unmatched since before World War I, and in the process beating teams we hadn’t defeated this century, like Randolph Macon and Hargrave. So I think I can speak for the coaches in saying we are proud of your effort, often in the face of adversity, such as injuries or falling behind early in a contest, and never giving up. And so for effort, sportsmanship, and character, I’d like to commend you for a job well done and congratulations.”
Each team’s coaches then took the podium to recognize individual athletes and award them with plaques and medals to commemorate their accomplishments. A full list of award recipients is below.
The Caissons Football Team, coming off an 8-0 season in which they hosted the State Semifinal game, also presented a special game ball, emblazoned with the team’s record and signed by each player, to MSG Anson.
The final and most prestigious award is given in honor of Colonel James G. Hogg. COL Hogg was athletic director, coach, and teacher at Massanutten Military Academy, Fishburne Military School, and Augusta Military Academy. He was an honors graduate of Davidson College, North Carolina, home of the Wildcats, a division 1 school, where he was a scholar-athlete. At Fishburne, Colonel Hogg was assistant headmaster and athletic director. He dedicated most of his life toward helping boys make the transition to becoming young men with honor. The Hogg Award is presented three times per year to the cadet-athlete that best embodies the ideals of athletic and academic excellence. A plaque in the foyer permanently displays the names of recipients.
This year’s Hogg award winner, Battalion Commander c/Maj Harold McCoo, was introduced by Anson who noted: “I would like to share a comment from Major McCoo’s soccer coach, CPT Greene: “He is the epitome of a student-athlete as evidenced by his high grades, athletic performance, leadership, time management, involvement in charitable clubs, good attitude, 100% effort, and sportsmanship. He might have had more success on the field at another school, but he accepted early on that this was his team and, eventually, his corps.
