Fishburne Military School Announces $4.5M Hitt-Millar Field House
Fishburne Military School Announces First New Construction in Twenty Years
Office of the Superintendent, Fishburne Military School, Waynesboro, VA – Fishburne Military School officially announces that the school will begin construction of the Hitt-
Millar Field House no later than August of 2018.
The 23,000 square-foot Hitt-Millar Field House at FMS will connect to the existing gymnasium on campus and will include a full basketball court, weight-training facilities, a multi-purpose conference area, a fully-equipped trainer’s room, and coaches’ offices. The new field house will also include a warming kitchen and will serve as a large, on-campus gathering location for activities and events associated with Parents’ Weekend, Alumni Weekend, and graduation or during periods of inclement weather. The multi-sport facility will be dividable and climate-controlled.
Harman Construction, Inc., of Harrisonburg, Virginia has been selected as the Design-Build Contractor for this $4.5M facility which is expected to be completed in August of 2019.
The project was made possible through generous donations from the Hitt and Millar family. Russell Hitt, FMS Class of 1953, a long-time supporter of Fishburne Military School joined with his daughter Tracy Hitt Millar, and her husband Jim Millar to provide this exceptional facility as a gift to the Corps of Cadets. Two of Russell Hitt’s grandsons, Wes Millar (FMS Class of 2007) and Gage Nash (FMS Class of 2012) are also proud graduates of Fishburne.
“The construction of this field house is a tremendous blessing to the future of Fishburne Military School and will serve as a vital tool in our continuing mission to produce educated and honorable young men of courage,” said CAPTAIN Mark E. Black, US NAVY(Ret.), Superintendent of Fishburne Military School. “Fishburne Military School’s Corps of Cadets are overwhelming thankful and will greatly benefit from the generosity of the Hitt and Millar family for generations to come.”
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
