Fishburne Military School Cadets Earn Spot in National Academic Bowl
Fishburne Military School’s JROTC Academic Team has advanced to the third and final round of the National JROTC Academic Bowl, sponsored this year by Norwich University.
The Caissons, led by Cadet James Wright, a junior from Seattle, Washington, is one of only 15 teams from 4th Brigade’s 316 schools advancing to this National Championship round. “This is a great testament to the strength of Fishburne’s programs,” noted team advisor and Senior Army Instructor, LTC Robert A. Hunt USA(ret), “and highlights the work ethic and talent level of our young men.”
The competition is open to more than 200,000 students from around the world. The events test JROTC students’ knowledge of English, Mathematics, Science, Leadership and Current Events. Each competing school fields a team of 6 Cadets (with the option of including 2 alternates) and the overall competition is designed to reinforce SAT/ACT preparation.
The online competition, open to high school JROTC students of all military branches, uses SAT-type challenges to test academic and leadership skills in a multi-level competition with national finals held online in April 14-30, 2014.
Participating students learn the value of citizenship, academic competition, leadership and a college education. They represent many geographic and socio-economic backgrounds. The competition began in Nov. 2013 with 3,237 teams participating in the first round.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command. For more information visit www.fishburne.org.
