Cadet Daniel May (Stafford, VA) was named as the Winter recipient of the James G. Hogg Award for Academic and Athletic Excellence.

The Fishburne Military School Caissons gathered last night in Lawton Chapel to celebrate the achievements of FMS’ winter athletics teams. Fishburne Athletic Director, MAJ Bryan Greene (VA), began the evening by thanking the coaching staff, athletes and those who came out in support of the teams, noting “The purpose of this banquet is to recognize those who stuck with their teams and refused to quit. The refusal to quit is a characteristic we should all respect.”

Greene went on to highlight some of the season’s challenges and successes, saying “there are two words that bounced around this long Winter Season: “Improvement” and “State”. The Swim Team improved all season and, as a testament to their hard work and dedication, set a host of personal records at the conference meet. The JV Basketball team took a while to gel; but, once they started to trust the system and each other, everyone who saw them play was impressed with how far they came, ending the season with a great win over Massanutten. The Varsity Basketball team started off 4-1 but then lost 6 straight games in December and January; however, when the team finally gelled, they won 7 of their last 8 games, won a conference tournament game for the first time since 2012, and earned a spot in the state tournament for the first time since 2008. The Rifle Team, under Coach Mawyer and Coach Spruill, are the 2015 State Champions. They trailed Hargrave in the state standings all year, but improved with every match, and the Caissons came out on top. Finally, the wrestling team continued their success under Coach C, once again bringing a strong presence to the state tournament after finishing second at the VIC Tournament. Daniel May moved on to the National Tournament as the Virginia State champ.”

Once each coach had recognized his team’s standouts, the final and most prestigious of Fishburne’s athletics awards. The Colonel James G. Hogg Award is presented three times per year to the cadet-athlete who best embodies the ideals of athletic and academic excellence. A plaque in the Fishburne foyer permanently displays the names of recipients. Cadet Daniel May ’15 (Stafford, VA) was presented with the Hogg Award by wrestling Coach Richard Chiarolanzio.
