Cortell Busby: Breaking it down

Cortell Busby didn’t need a year of postgraduate basketball. The 6’2″, 190-pound guard had signed with South Carolina State after a standout career at Lewisville (S.C.) High School, where he was a two-time runnerup in state player-of-the-year voting and scored 2,111 career points.

But Busby wanted to learn a little bit more before heading off to college. Which is why he chose a year under FMS postgrad coach Ed Huckaby, himself a former college point guard and college assistant.

“My mental game and floor leadership as a point guard, learning from one of the best in Coach Huck, has really helped me out. I feel like I’m 10 times better than when I came here. It’s probably one of the best decisions in my life, being able to come to Fishburne Military School,” said Busby, who signed with IUPUI after getting offers from Tennessee-Chattanooga, Boston College and Missouri State.

Busby also took care of business academically at Fishburne. He will start his first season at IUPUI as a sophomore academically, and he aims to receive his college degree in three years.

“He’s a great point guard with a knack for scoring and is one of the best leaders I’ve ever been around. He’s a leader personified,” said IUPUI coach Todd Howard. “He’s a coach’s son, and he was the leader of a talent-laden, nationally ranked Fishburne Military School team. In the classroom, he epitomizes what we look for in student-athletes.”
