College Visit Series Kicks off at Fishburne Military School
Hampden-Sydney College First in Series of Colleges to Meet FMS Cadets
Waynesboro, VA — Fishburne Military School Guidance’s 2017-2018 College Visits series kicked off this morning as thirteen cadets gathered to meet with an admissions counselor from Hampden-Sydney College. The visiting colleges series gives FMS seniors an opportunity to meet with representatives from a variety of colleges and universities as the cadets prepare to make their college choices.
Cadets are encouraged to explore their college interests by asking questions about the application process, areas of study offered, school community and more. As the first in this series, the Hampden-Sydney visit and discussion centered upon the advantages and challenges of attending a smaller all-male college as well as upon the cultural and networking opportunities available to Hampden-Sydney students.
“An important part of the college selection process,” explains FMS Guidance Director, MAJ Val Gochenour, “is helping a young man find the college or university that is the best fit for his talents, interests and personality. Some students thrive in a larger university setting, some find greater success in a smaller program. This is why we have a variety of schools visit throughout the year and why we make trips off-campus to visit others. It’s important for our young men to know their best options and to know how to evaluate one program against another based upon their own needs.”
Other schools coming to campus to visit with FMS seniors in the coming weeks include Virginia Tech, Old Dominion University, Norwich University and Mary Baldwin College. Additional off-campus and on-campus visits are planned throughout the remainder of the year. FMS Guidance also sponsors a week-long career fair in the Spring, during which local professionals are invited to discuss career and education options with interested cadets.
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built on the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS has been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation that is accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
