Coach Huckaby Comments After FUMA Win!

Dear FMS Family!

We had a fantastic win this weekend and defeated Fork Union Military Academy on Saturday evening. I was very impressed by our energy level, confidence and fortitude to compete for forty minutes against a tough FUMA squad. Fork Union is well coached, disciplined and presented a tremendous challenge. We were fortunate to be able to make plays near the end or at the end to win the game on a last second shot. My hat is off to Coach Fletcher Arritt and FUMA. There were no losers in that game.

We have really worked on playing with confidence over the last few weeks. Confidence means strengthening my players’ belief in our systems and in themselves. It is incredibly important that all of my guys believe in their game and believe that the system we’ve worked so hard to develop will work against quality teams like Fork Union.

Our systems are based on preparation and execution during any game situation. Mental toughness is a cornerstone aspect of our program. I thought the Fishburne PGs did a great job preparing for FUMA, and playing tough until the end. We played tough, hard-nosed, man-to-man defense that seemed to disrupt their flow towards the end of the game. I thought we had better execution than FUMA. Our defense caused several forced shots and our full-court press seemed to cause them enough trouble that we got a few turnovers.

Quincy Taylor played phenomenally. His scoring and leadership during the game were both great! Keion Palmer and Joel Brokenbrough provided key stability on the front lines. Chris Nelson was excellent defensively. Kevin Butler played limited minutes but very effectual while in the game. Butler had a timely three-pointer and was very solid defensively. He brought a great positive energy to the game.

Our free throw percentage during the last few minutes was excellent.

All in all, this was a fabulous win for the PG team and for Fishburne. Several folks have come up to me and mentioned they believe this is the best win for Fishburne ever! While I’m not sure about that, I’m certain that there will be other exciting wins for the Caissons.

Sincerely,

Coach Ed Huckaby
