Cadet Sam Hollander reflects on his journey through high school

“Sam, you are not living up to your potential.” That phrase defines the first half of my academic life. I attended a small private school throughout my elementary and middle school years, enrolled in a large public high school, and then made the choice to come to a small military boarding school. I have seen it all, and in the end, I am proud to say that I found what works for me.

FMS Says Goodbye to J.D. Salinger

Cadets at Fishburne Military School acknowledged the value of author J. D. Salinger and his introduction of the main character, Holden Caulfield, through The Catcher in the Rye. Fishburne cadets read this novel about a student who is expelled from a private school in Pennsylvania and travels to the village in New York City. They identify with Holden’s intolerance for corrupt phonies in his life and the insincerity of adults.

The book touches a nerve in teenagers attracted to Caulfield’s support for nonconformist attitudes and the book has remained a best seller since 1951. Fishburne cadets readily identify with Holden Caulfield in The Catcher in the Rye and made these comments about the required reading.

FMS Discusses Military Style of Information Transfer and Teaching

At Fishburne Military School we work each day motivated by the knowledge that a team of professionals is securing the future lives of our cadets one class, practice, and drill at a time. Our method of transferring knowledge is military-oriented, not because we are training soldiers but because a structured, caring environment is critical for success at Fishburne and in life. We believe that young men need to learn the intangible skills that also accompany our methods here at FMS (leadership, organization, punctuality, sharing, and accountability) in order to become successful college students or professionals in whatever industry they choose. Our method of educating young men works as evidenced by our 131 years of tradition and success. Currently, 100% of our seniors are accepted into a college or university of their choice.

Key Club Cadets Contribute to Holiday Cheer

Each year the Key Club takes pleasure in doing multiple service projects during the Christmas holidays to help those in our community that are less fortunate than ourselves. For the past 10 years the cadets have packed food boxes and participated in the Red Kettle Drive for the Salvation Army. This year for the first time, the Key Club served as “Santa’s Helpers” at Breakfast with Santa sponsored by the Waynesboro Public Library. On Monday, December 14, we celebrated our last Key Club meeting for 2009 by decorating a Christmas tree for a family in our community who could not otherwise afford a tree and holiday decorations – this project is sponsored by the Wayneboro Downtown Development, Inc.
