Cadets Experience Frontier Life
Cadets from Fishburne Military School got an unexpectedly fun educational experience on Saturday as Chief Warrant Officer Lacey brought his World History students to visit The Frontier Culture Museum of Virginia. Cadets were invited to get hands-on with a number of exhibits to see just how difficult chores like sawing timber with a crosscut saw could be.

38 Cadet leaders from Fishburne Military School spent the day once again at Fishburne’s partner school, Rockfish River Elementary School (Afton, VA) to conduct the National Junior Achievement High School Heroes program. The Cadets broke into teams to teach nine classes, totaling approximately 200 students from kindergarten up to second grade, for the entire school day.

In all, over a dozen different career paths were outlined and explained to the cadets; and, for those still undecided about what path they’d like to pursue, former FMS Guidance Director, Mr. Russ Ingersoll, and Ms. Sara Green (Assistant Director of the University of Virginia’s Career Center) were on hand to lead special discussions about selecting the right career and college.

Waynesboro, VA — The Fishburne Military School campus was packed this weekend with family and friends who were in Waynesboro to celebrate the school’s annual Parents Winter Weekend. On hand were family members from as far away as Hawaii, New Orleans, Florida and California. Cadet Major Luciano Dolfi (Stuarts Draft, VA) received the Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award.

Old Town Alexandria, VA — Fishburne Military School (Waynesboro, VA) was named best Military Unit and Drill Team as well as Best Youth Band at the George Washington Birthday Parade in Old Town Alexandria on Monday. Well-wishers, including members of the United States Army Old Guard Honor Unit visited with the Caissons in the staging area just prior to stepping off.

72 Caissons earned a place on the Honor Roll and an additional 40 Cadets earned a spot on the Distinguished Honor Roll. A Cadet must earn at least a 3.0 grade point average with no grade lower than a C in order to be placed on the Honor Roll. Distinguished Honor Roll students must earn at least a 3.5 grade point average with no grade lower than a B.

“This entire experience,” explains FMS Superintendent, retired Navy Captain Mark E. Black, “has been tremendously valuable to the learning environment here. Cadets were able to put their everyday training to use. Our young men have seen first-hand now how proper planning, time management, resource management, and dedication to task can all come together to produce amazing results on the largest of stages.”

Fishburne Military School’s Troop 1879 has a newly minted Eagle Scout in its ranks. Cadet Howard Douglas Marsh, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Marsh of Middlebrook, VA, was elevated to the rank of Eagle Scout during a ceremony held before the entire Corps, Marsh was officially sworn in as an Eagle Scout and his mother, Mrs. Barbara Marsh, pinned this latest award upon her son’s uniform.

As part of Fishburne Military School’s ongoing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) initiative, one technology instructor at the 137-year-old military school is helping Cadets grasp advanced concepts by blasting aliens. In real-world terms, the Caissons are mastering 21st-century skills while having a little creative fun.
