Caissons Wrestling Reaches 9-0!
Last night it was senior night for the Caissons. We started the night by honoring all the seniors on the wrestling team, and entered the evening ready to first take on Randolph-Macon Academy (RMA), and then the Miller School in what was the official (Virginia Independent School) VIS match-up for the championship that is now just two weeks away.
Before the action was to take place on the mat, we made a correction for the scoring of a match that took place last week. In reviewing some records of the VIS match against the Blue Ridge School, a young man for our opponent took to the mat at the wrong weight class and that wrestler won his match. This error was discovered by Athletic Director Carl Frye of Blue Ridge, and he took swift action that forfeited the weight class. In doing so, he moved the team scoring to now reflect a Caisson victory. Our loss turned into a win had the Caisson Wrestling Team entering Senior Night with a record of 7 – 0 over all and 5 – 0 in the VIC (Virginia Independent Conference).
Well the good news just kept on rolling for the Caissons. When the last match was over the final score was FMS 45, RMA 34 thus moving the Caissons to 8 – 0 on the season. Some highlights from the RMA match included Michael LaBianca running his current record on the mat for this season to 12 – 4, and undefeated in the VIC. Also, Tyler Lawson had a come from behind match and his first real tough test in several matches thus moving his current record to 12 – 2.
The winning carried over to the next round when FMS took on the Miller School. The Caissons started on a roll running the score to 42 – 6, before Miller attempted to make a come back but it fell well short as the final score ended up FMS 60, Miller School 15. It was a great night for the Caisson’s as the night came to an end and the mats put back up on the stage for the rest of the season’s practices. The guys were filled with excitement as they now sit with a 9 – 0 record on the season with five matches left. Next week the Caisson Wrestling will travel to Liberty Christian Academy to take on Virginia Episcopal School, Hargrave, and LCA all in the same night which will be the biggest matches of the season, and come just over a week prior to the VIC Championship. Then the following week they will face once again VES and Covenant just days prior to the Championship.
Our goals are still set and the team is working towards reaching them. We are one down as the goal of a winning season is now a lock, but as we say be happy but don’t be satisfied because there is more wrestling to take place.
