Farrar Takes Gold in Commonwealth Games
Rising Fishburne Military School Senior, Cadet Matthew Farrar, Wins Gold at 2017 VA Commonwealth Games
Lynchburg, VA – Over the weekend, Liberty University hosted the Virginia Commonwealth Games where some of the best athletes in the state came to compete in their respective sports.
Fishburne Military School Cadet Matthew Farrar (Waynesboro, VA), who trains out of Caissons Head Wrestling Coach Terry Waters’ Panther Wrestling Club in the off season represented Fishburne well.
Wrestling in the 132 pound weight class, Farrar opened the tournament with a first period pin. He quickly got the takedown using his signature ankle side-sweep and quickly ran a ball-and-chain into a double-bar for the pin.
In the semifinal match, Farrar faced off with a state qualifier from Allegheny High School. He once again was in total control of the match before getting the pin and moving into the championship match. There he met an undefeated wrestler from Graham High School.
The two grapplers kept it even for most of the first period before Farrar, once again, used a side sweep to get the take down and a 2-0 lead into the second period. After the second period, the score still stood at 2-0 in favor of Farrar.
In the third period, Farrar, in the top position, worked a 2 on 1 wrist ride into a half-nelson and picked up the pin and the Gold.
All summer long, Coach Waters has been telling Matthew to “get back to basics and do the little things well. Master what you do well and improve on new things.”
Coach Waters was pleased with Farrar’s performance, noting that “He wrestled very well and was very confident. There is not an elevator to the top; you have to take the stairs. Mathew knows this.”
The pride from Coach Waters was clear. “It was a good feeling knowing a Caisson brought home the Gold.”
