Caissons Win Home Tourney, Top MMA and FUMA

IMG_1151On Friday night the Fishburne Caissons faced the Massanutten Colonels in the first round of the 2013 Caisson Classic. After leading by 8 in the first quarter, Massanuten came back to tie the game before the Caissons went on a 10-2 run to end the half. It was more of the same in the second half as the Caissons outscored the Colonels 56-28 to win 84-60 and earn a spot in the championship game. Robert Smith had a team high 20 points while Kian Tate and senior captain Hunter Couchot had 17 each. Fellow senior captain Cederick Ross scored in double digits as well with 14. Isaiah Shaw was a spark off the bench in the second half, scoring 9 points and Antwan Brown provided 2 points to go along with his stellar defense on Massanutten’s bigs. Garrison Grady and Thomas Beyene added to the total with 3 and 2 points respectively.

Waiting for the Caissons on Monday afternoon in the championship game were the Fork Union Blue Devils, who almostIMG_1261   doubled the score of Randolph-Macon in their opener on Friday.
On Monday afternoon Fork Union jumped aout to an early lead, leading by as many as 9 before the Caissons caught fire and stepped up their defense, leading by 2 at the half, 33-31. It was a back and forth battle in the second half, but the Caissons kept fighting. At the end of the game, both teams had key players in foul trouble as starters found themselves on both benches. In the late stages, FMS was up by 6 and FUMA turned up the pressure, forcing turnovers and bad shots, to get the score IMG_1293down to 75-74 with 15.3 seconds left. Robert Smith put the game away, hitting 3 of 4 free throws, to give Fishburne a 4 point win, 78-74. Smith had a game high 29 points. Kian Tate and Hunter Couchot also scored in double digits with 18 and 13 respectively. Cederick Ross had 8 points before fouling out, and Thomas Beyene added 6 points despite his foul trouble as well. Antwan Brown turned in another stellar defensive performance and added 4 points to the winning effort.

Fishburne Military School won the Caisson Classic for only the 2nd time in the tournament’s 10 year history. Smith, Tate, and Ross were all named to the All-Tournament team and Couchot was named All-Tournament MVP.
