Caissons Track team competes in 5K along the James River in Richmond
On a picture perfect day in Richmond last Saturday, Fishburne competed in the Saint Francis Home 5K along the James River.
Our team was low on numbers due to ACT testing for juniors and a few late week illnesses and injuries, but those of us remaining made the best of it and had a good experience.
Colin Turnnidge was the second overall finisher in 19:49 (times were about a minute slower than usual due to the course being long and including several stairs over canals). Colin had the lead at the halfway point but was chased down in the last mile by an Australian visiting the city, and in his words “popping in” to see what the fuss was all about. Travis Knapp finished in the top the top ten and second in the 18 and under age group in about 21:00.
Other team members included Lozie Goolsby, Gary Nelson, James Park, and Bevan Morrison-Rodgers, who all ran well and were outstanding representatives of Fishburne. A lot of these guys are mainly sprinters, so I appreciate their toughness in running an event that is not exactly their forte, nor what they’ve been training for.
We plan to make a spring race an ongoing tradition and perhaps also add a race in the fall, although our calendar is rather packed with conference races. We’ll see how it goes.
