Fishburne Military School Swimmers Mark Personal Bests, Send 1 to State Championships

Fishburne Military School Swimmer Heads to State ChampionshipsWaynesboro, VA — The Caissons efforts in the pool were rewarded as nearly every single swimmer set personal records on Friday night.

Qijun Yao (Le Havre, France) finished in 4th place in the Boys 200 Free, dropping 9.85 second off his previous best; he set a personal record in the 100 breaststroke dropping 4.19 as his finished 7th overall.

First year swimmer Tommy Jones (South Fulton, TN)  had his strongest performance of the year in the 50 Freestyle, dropping .83 of a second from the meet the week before and finished 9th in a large field of 23 swimmers.  He swam even faster when he anchored the Boys 200 Yard Freestyle Relay – in 27.55 seconds – leading them to a 5th place finish.

Micah Reid (Charlottesville, VA) set a personal record when he dropped 4.37 seconds with his 9th place finish in the 100 Freestyle.  Derek Prestes (Glen Allen, VA) dropped 1.57, Hongxi Qian (Beijing, China) dropped 8.26 seconds as they set personal records in the same event.  Gavin Flanagan (Centreville, VA)  had a strong performance finishing 5th overall in one of the harder events of the night – the 500 Freestyle.

Fishburne Military School Swimmer Charles Fessler-Krebs earns spot in State Championships.Coach John Rood noted, “I’m proud of all the guys, but I’m extremely proud of my seniors”: Russell Leslie (Amelia, VA) set a personal best and won his heat, as he dropped 13.89 seconds in the 100 backstroke and 5.06 seconds in the 50 Free.  Alexander Sponeman (Fishers, IN) set a personal record in the 100 breaststroke and lowered his time by 5.95 seconds.”

Fishburne Military School’s standout swimmer this season, Charles Fessler-Krebs (Annandale, VA) finished 5th in the 100 Backstroke – dropping 3.37 second off his best time and he dropped 4.06  seconds in the 100 Butterfly. During his performance on Friday, Fessler-Krebs set a personal record, broke a Fishburne record, finished 1st in Distirict and qualified for a spot in the State Championships on Friday.

Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command.
