Friday night the Caisson Football team traveled to Farmville, Virginia to play the undefeated (2-0) Fuqua Falcons. Fishburne jumped out to an early lead of 18-6 at the half. There was tremendous play by starting quarterback Hunter Couchot and Chandler Wright on offense. On defense, the Caissons were led by Devin Grady, Garrison Grady, and Andrew Kirkman.
In the second half, Fishburne stopped the opening drive by Fuqua.
When Fishburne got the ball back, Hunter Couchot raced into the end zone and converted a two-point conversion to give the Caissons a 26-6 lead.
In the fourth quarter, the Falcons fought back and scored 20 unanswered points. This forced the game into overtime.
On the first overtime attempt, Fuqua scored and converted a two point try to make the score 34-26. However, the Caissons dug deep and put together several impressive plays. Jon Ross scored to bring Fishburne within two points of tying the game. On the two point try, Andrew Kirkman, Antwon Brown, Jeff Frye, Drake Hansen and Russell Holland led the way for Ross to score, tying the game and sending it into double overtime.
During the second overtime, the defense once again, stepped up and held Fuqua to a Field Goal. This gave the Falcons a 37-34 lead.
Fishburne went back to work, and gave the ball to Ross, who ran behind the great surge of the offensive line and scored the winning touchdown. That score gave Fishburne their season opening win, 40-37.
The player of the game for Fishburne was Chandler Wright for his outstanding performance throughout the game. Chandler, played well on offense and defense. Andrew Davis was honorable mention for player of the game. He had a great game as well.
This week Fishburne plays a tough opponent at home against Roanoke Catholic. Roanoke is 2-0 on the season.
(Coaches’ note: I have never been so proud of a team after a game than Friday night. Our team could have “packed it in” when Fuqua scored 28 straight points, but the Caissons did not quit. They pulled together when it mattered most and brought home the victory. A great life-lesson for everyone.)
