Caissons Baseball Keeps Rolling

On Tuesday, the Caissons took on MMA whom they beat 21 – 5 in just 5 innings last week. MMA did not forget that beating and came to Waynesboro ready for pay back.

The game started slowly as the Caissons scored 1 run early to take a 1 – 0 lead. Then MMA answered with a run of their own to tie the score 1 – 1 and it stayed that way for a while. Then the Caissons put up 2 more runs to take a 3 – 1 lead. But, unlike last week, the Caissons could not deliver the knock-out blow.

The bats were resting quiet and some very untimely throwing errors suddenly made the game look much different as MMA came back and not only tied the game but took a 5 – 3 lead with just 2 innings to play. The Caissons were able to push a run across in the bottom of the 6th inning to close the score to 5 – 4. In the top of the 7th, Collin Wade retired MMA in order to set up a bottom of the 7th inning that would mean a lot with the Score 5 – 4 in MMA’s favor.

In the bottom of the seventh inning (HS only plays 7 innings) Canna would lead off and take 2 quick swings and foul off both pitches. He battled the pitcher for about a 12-pitch at bat with foul balls until he took ball 4 and walked to put the run to tie the score on 1st base with no outs. Duffer was up next and he would come to the plate to try to advance Canna. Canna was able to steal 2nd base and now the run to tie the game was in scoring position. Duffer would end up striking out as Canna was able to steal 3rd base; so, now the run was just 90 feet away from a tie game and Davis would step to the plate.

MMA would called time out for the coach to talk to his pitcher and infield. This gave the Caissons a chance to call a suicide squeeze play, meaning Canna would break for the plate on the pitch and Davis would bunt. If Davis missed the bunt Canna would be caught at the plate for out number 2. The pitch came, Canna took off for home, and Davis layed down the perfect bunt. Canna scored to tie the game as MMA tried to make a play at the plate, allowing Davis to get to first base safely. Euteneuer was the next batter up and there was a lot of weight on him now, needing a hit to win the game. On the first pitch, Davis safely stole 2nd. On the next pitch Davis stole third base and, on the attempt by MMA to get Davis out at third, the ball went past the MMA third basemen allowing Davis to take home on the wild throw andwin the game.

A bottom of the 7the come from behind win 6 – 5.

The team’s record is now 5 – 2 and the Caissons are on a 4-game winning streak. They are also 3 – 2 in the VIC.

Next up: Home game on Thursday Vs. Covenant who is currently ranked #7 in the state. This will be a very tough game for the young Caissons Baseball team who have come a long way. Come out and support them not just against the #7 team in the state but also a BIG VIC Foe.

Go Caissons!!!
