Caissons’ “A Relay” Swimmers Qualify for State Tournament
Report from Coach Gray
Wenesday’s meet against Roanoke Catholic and North Cross marked the first time in over 8 years that the Caissons have had a relay qualify for States! Mckinley Duffer lead off with a spectacular 50 back, John Hutchinson held his own in the Breast, Joshua Draper had a wonderful 50 Fly even though he hadn’t been in the water at all since we left for winter break, and Devin Soulsby brought it home with his 50 Free. The team and Coach were ecstatic!! The relay came in first against RCS and second against NCS.
Unfortunately the weeks out of the water during break and some missing swimmers (due to illness and academic requirements) meant that FMS would struggle in many of the other events. McKinley Duffer was expelled from the meet for entering the water in an inappropriate way before his 100 back (which he was almost guaranteed to win). The Caissons had to scramble to replace Duffer in the 400 Free Relay and in doing so had to rework all of their relay teams.
In the end, the Caissons finished behind RCS and NCS despite having beaten North Cross before the long break.
Fishburne’s record is now 2:5 with their next meet coming up this Friday. Coach Gray is optimistic that the team can regroup, get healthy, and have a better overall meet.
