#6 FMS loses OT heartbreaker, 112-110
Fredrick. Edmond. That is all.
The 6’4″ shooting guard was an unstoppable force in the second half and an immovable object in overtime to lead Kingdom Prep to a 112-110 upset of sixth-ranked Fishburne Military School Tuesday night.
Edmond lit up the Caissons (9-4) for 18 points in the second half and then scored 12 of Kingdom Prep’s 14 points in overtime, including a tying three from 30 feet with 45 seconds left and the game-winner after stealing an inbounds pass in the frontcourt and driving the length of the court for a layup with 4.4 seconds left.
Daniel Dixon (William and Mary) had an open three at the buzzer rim out.
“I’m not going to say that was an out-of-body experience, because he’s capable of doing that on a nightly basis. But Fred Edmond played an incredible game tonight. Hats off to him,” FMS assistant Derrick Robinson said.
Edmond had lit up Miller School for 43 points on Monday night in a win in Crozet. “The game plan was to make his shots difficult, not let him get going, and we let him get going,” said Robinson.
Edmond had 17 in the first half, but Fishburne still led 60-52 going into the break, and extended the lead to 76-65 with 14:07 to go before Edmond got going.
A pair of threes from the guard keyed a 18-5 run that gave Kingdom Prep an 82-80 lead with 10:48 left, and the game was a nip-and-tuck battle from there.
Fishburne had a chance to close it out in regulation. Kuran Iverson (Memphis) scored on a stickback after collecting two offensive rebounds to give Fishburne a 98-95 lead with 1:19 to go.
“I was trying to be more aggressive in the second half, use my size to get into the post,” said Iverson, who led the Caissons with 27 points.
Edmond tied it at 98 with a long three with 49.5 seconds to go. Fishburne ended up with a chance at the last shot in regulation, but was not able to get a shot off, sending the game to the extra period.
Iverson took control early in the OT, scoring on back-to-back possessions to give FMS a 104-101 lead with 3:37 left.
A basket by Walter Foster (Towson) made it 110-107 with 51 seconds left, and Foster was fouled on the play with a chance to sink a free throw and make it a two-possession game. Foster did make the free throw, but the basket was disallowed on a disputed lane-violation call.
That opened the door for Edmond’s late-OT heroics.
The loss was the second in a row for Fishburne and the third in four games for the Caissons, who are now in their winter break through Jan. 6.
