Although the stated purpose of these basketball clinics is “to teach the fundamentals of the game with an emphasis on individual and team development”, it’s readily apparent that there is a lot more going on here. Young men learning to mentor and discovering the joys of community service…children finding friendly and caring faces eager to spend time with them…and one proud Coach thrilled to help export the Fishburne experience.

The night started out with The Caissons taking to the mat against Virginia Episcopal School in a VIC showdown prior to the VIC Championships next weekend (9 Feb). Also during this a lone Miller School Wrestler would slip in and wrestle his match as VES did not have anyone at 138 pound. So it started with Brandon Allen taking his forfeit from VES then Pinning the Miller wrestler for the win over Miller School, and start the onslaught over VES. When it was all said and done the team stepped up big again with a 72 -12 win over VIC Rival VES, this moved the team’s record to 18 – 2 on the season.

Zach Lewis (Canisius) scored 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting to lead the Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball team to an easy 105-51 victory over Lynchburg College Monday night.

Fork Union outrebounded Fishburne by 14. The Caissons were only 8-of-20 from the free-throw line, and missed the front ends of three one-and-ones. And still #4 FMS had a shot to win at the end. “We just couldn’t finish them off, and that’s my fault,” said Fishburne postgrad coach Ed Huckaby after his team’s 74-72 upset loss to Fork Union in the opener of the FMS Scotto’s Military Challenge Friday night.

The coaches strolling the sidelines at this weekend’s FMS Scotto’s Military Challenge will be wearing sneakers as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Challenge to bring awareness to cancer research. Several college coaches are expected to be on hand due to a different kind of awareness.

Last night saw the Caissons Wrestling team head down the street to face Grace Christian School and Waynesboro High School. The match up came to be called by a few names:
The War in Waynesboro
The Battle for the Boro
The Clash at Collins
Pick your favorite but in the end what the Caissons called it was VICTORY.
