Swim Season Ends on a High Note
Last night was our final regular season meet in swimming and there were some amazing performances. We swam against Hargrave and VES, both teams that beat us previously this year. Will Johnstone came in first overall in the 50 free. Tim Moriconi got a life time best time in the 500 Free dropping 20 seconds and setting a new school record. Jason Montgomery had the most amazing 100 breast. For the past 4 years Jason has always swam the 100 breast in 1:16. Yesterday he dropped 4 whole seconds and swam it in 1:12.12, an incredible accomplishment!! Gabe Sun had a really strong 100 back stroke coming in second and beating Tim Moriconi who usually wins that event for us. There were some surprise upsets in the free relays; we beat Hargrave in the 200 Free Relay and VES in the 400 Free Relay. In the end we came in second, beating VES but losing to Hargrave. However both of the opposing coaches made a point to congratulate me on how much our guys improved. It was a great meet!
Final Scores: HMA: 519, FMS: 469, VES: 358

Yesterday was the first home meet at Fishburne in over 27 years, and what a meet it was!! We lost our last meet against Massanutten by two points and our guys were pumped to turn the tables on our rivals. O’Connor and Nash pulled out a one-two finish in the 220 Free again. O’Connor won this time around even though he lost count and stopped early taking off his goggles before he realized that he was only halfway done. Montgomery came in first in the 220 IM, Johnstone got a first place in the 110 fly (and would have gotten first place by over a length even if the Massanutten swimmer had finished), and they teamed up for one-two finish in the 110 Breast. Moriconi rocked the 495 free easily keeping up with the pace I set for him and winning by a large margin. Burkard lost count and swam an extra lap for the corps, but earned us some points by coming in third. The big upset was in the 146 Free relay (usually the 200 Free Relay). Massanutten won this event last time around and was in the lead by two body lengths after the first two swimmers. Simons closed the gap some, but it was Johnstone who swam an amazing 36 and pulled ahead of MMA. Winning that relay was an unexpected boon and clinched the win for us. The final score was FMS: 53, MMA: 37. We are looking forward to a repeat performance against MMA next week.
