2009-2010 Wrestling Season Wrap-Up

With the VIC Championship Tournament set to take place this weekend (Sat., 13 Feb) it’s time to look back at how the regular season went for the Caisson Wrestling Team. There were several highlights for the season, so lets take a look at how it all panned-out.

The season started with a bang when the team traveled to the Miller School for the Season Opener, and then when all was said and done, boarded the bus to head home with a season opening win 66 to 14. Then after a snow out with VEC the Team headed to the Massanutten Tournament where they came home with 10 team members winning medals. Just prior to the holiday break was the Home Opener for the Caisson Wrestlers when they hosted rival MMA on the mat. Again, when all was said and done, the scoreboard read FMS 57 – MMA 23. The Caissons headed home for the holidays with a team record of 2 – 0.

After the holiday break, the team picked-up right where they left off coming back with another win over Miller, then moved on to beat Covenant, Blue Ridge, RMA, North Cross,  and Roanoke Catholic. We then beat Miller School once again thus moving the team record to 9 – 0 and waiting to face just three more teams before the regular season would end. Well the winter weather did not agree with any more matches and the team sat idle and just practiced every day waiting for the next match that never came. Now with the regular season over the team can enjoy one big fact, they ended the regular season UNDEFEATED!!!

This is a great accomplishment for this young team that will now head off to tournaments the next two weekends. This weekend the team will be at the VIC in Lynchburg then next weekend at the VISAA State Championships in Richmond. If you see a member of the team walking on campus make sure again you let them know how proud they make the FMS Family and what great pride we have in what they have accomplished so far this season. I could now type out what great records some wrestlers, what big wins some had, what outstanding performances some had, but I won’t as some names would not make print, as some of them did not get to step on the mat a lot of times against other teams but did step on the mat every day with team mates. Some will earn their varsity letter for the outstanding work they did every day in practice pushing all the members of the team to work harder.

To see practice every day and still see 19, 20 and even 25 kids there even injured ones learning and pushing the others is a great sign of how these young men have come together as a TEAM. Yes, on the mat it’s one-on-one against another wrestler, but once they step off of the mat it’s the rest of the team patting them on the back for a good job, or cheering them up after a tough individual loss. But the one thing they did not have to do was pick themselves up from a team loss.
