New Spring Clubs Emerge at Fishburne Military School
As the spring athletics seasons begin to ramp up, some Cadets are finding new ways to explore their interests at FMS. A number of new clubs (both athletic and STEM-related) have begun to emerge on campus. The first semester of the 2013-2014 academic year saw the creation of a Rocket Club, a Future Physicians Club, the rebirth of the Varsity Club and a record number of young men participating in Key Club.
We can now add two more options to this growing list of extra-curriculars. Thanks to Cadet interest and organizing, Fishburne Military School now boasts an Ice Hockey Club and a Model Aviation Club.
CPT Seamus Moody, the Ice Hockey Club advisor and FMS Science teacher noted, “there are 3 participants right now (Bomarsi, Canna, Wren-Russ) but interest seems to be building. The whole idea started a couple of years ago with Colin Green and has gotten a little more popular each year since. I played in college and still play today … I figured that since I was going to the rink anyway there were probably a few cadets who played as well and would welcome the ice time.”
For Cadets who might be interested in a warmer past time during these waning days of the Dark Ages, Cadet Nicholas Craan has organized a Model Aviation Club. Cadets participating in this new club will study historic aircraft, practice reading blue-prints and express some creativity by painting and decorating their finished models. The group, despite budgetary murmurings in Washington, are currently pressing forward with the construction of their own A-10 “Warthog” (in 1:48 scale).
“Club sports and activities like this,” explains FMS Superintendent, COL Gary Morrison (VA), “are an outstanding opportunity for our young men to pursue their interests and express their own personalities. It helps them stay engaged, active and focused in other aspects of their daily lives as well.”
“The fact that Cadets are actively organizing these clubs,” he continued, “is also a testament to the quality of young men we have here at Fishburne, and to the health of the overall program. These young men are actively structuring their own time in order pursue constructive and positive interests. This is just one more of the many examples of why we should be so proud of our young men.”
Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. Boasting a 100% college-acceptance rate for the past 10 consecutive years, FMS has also been designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academics. Fishburne hosts one of only four Summer JROTC programs in the nation, accredited by US Army Cadet Command. For more information visit www.fishburne.org.
