FMS PGs clamp down on Richard Bland, 101-46
The number 82 was stuck in the minds of the players on the Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball team all day Monday.
“I left that number up on the scoreboard,” said Caissons coach Ed Huckaby, whose team won 120-82 over Stillwater Prep on Sunday.
Huckaby “didn’t like the 82 points that we gave up,” and let his players know that a repeat performance was not in the offing Monday night with Richard Bland Community College coming to town.
FMS gave the defensive effort that Huckaby wanted in the final 20 minutes of a 101-46 victory.
“This might be our most consistent effort for a whole half this year,” assistant coach Derrick Robinson said of the second-half effort that saw the Caissons limit Bland to 16 points in the final 20 minutes.
Fishburne (15-5) came out hot at the start, going up 22-1 at the 12-minute mark before a 13-2 Bland run cut the lead to 10 midway through the half.
The Caissons turned up the defensive pressure in the final 10 minutes of the opening stanza to fuel a fast-break frenzy that left FMS up 55-30 at the break.
Huckaby was about as unhappy with the 30 on the scoreboard as he was the 82 that he’d left up from the previous night’s final.
“The goal was to not let them get 50,” said Devin Call, a 6’4″, 185-pound guard from Winchester who led a balanced Fishburne attack with 16 points.
FMS opened the second half with a 29-4 scoring burst that made it 84-34 with 11 minutes left and coasted from there.
Matt Gorski added 15 points for Fishburne, which also got 14 points from Khalil Alford, 11 points from Aly Hudgins and 10 points from Desmon Shaver.
