FMS Cross Country Wins 9th Annual Fishburne Invitational
With a host of Cadets, faculty, staff and parents on hand to cheer on the Caissons, the Fishburne Cross Country team brought home the school’s first overall victory since the event’s inception nine years ago. Of the 78 runners and 6 schools competing, the Caissons logged four of the day’s top ten individual scores to secure the team victory with second-place Eastern Mennonite HS 32 points behind.
The Corps of Cadets turned out to Coyner Springs Park in force and lined the 3 mile route shouting encouragement and waiving the Caissons’ flag. Staff and faculty further contributed to the day’s event by ensuring that there would be no shortage of snacks, drinks and praise waiting for the runners when they completed the course.
For those uninitiated: Cross Country scoring is based upon the order in which each team’s top five runners complete the course and one point is assigned per position (i.e. 2nd place = 2pts, 8th place =8pts) with the lowest overall score winning the team competition. With overall time being irrelevant, the team able to put the most runners at the front of the pack secures the victory. As one Caisson after another cruised across the finish line, the cheers rose as the crowed began to anticipate a win.
Garnet and gold runner’s singlets flowed into the crowd of Camouflage ACUs as the Corps surrounded and congratulated each runner at the end of the course. “The boys ran a great race,” said Bev Pelaccio, Asst. Dir. of Alumni Affairs, “and it was really wonderful to see the Corps support them the way they did. You don’t usually see that in Cross Country.”
“I just want to give a special thank you for the massive show of support from the school,” said MSgt Mike Anson, FMS Athletics Director and CC Coach, “the runners responded well and we were able to bring back our FMS Invitational win”.
