Fishburne Wrestling Wins Conference Duals Meet

Fishburne Military School Wrestlers Win Conference Duals Meet

Waynesboro, VA – The Fishburne Military School Wrestling Team traveled to Hargrave Military Academy to do battle with conference foes Covenant School and Hargrave with the regular seasonFishburne Military School (Waynesboro, VA) Wrestling Conference Championship on the line.

The Caissons opened the night with a 52-34 win over Covenant. Jacob Fincham (Fredericksburg, VA,) undefeated in the conference, got things rolling when he recorded a 2nd period fall. Fincham was in control the entire match and it was just a matter of time before he got the turn for a fall. After two forfeits, Senior Tyler Allen (Weyers Cave, VA) took to the mat and needed just twenty-four seconds to win by pin. Fishburne had opted to bump Allen up a weight class and he went right to work. Fellow senior Mason Schuhmacher (Fort Belvoir, VA) then locked horns and recorded a 12-1 major decision.

Covenant would win 3 of the last 4 matches, but that was not enough to overcome the Caissons lead. Going into the day, Fishburne knew that Covenant was strong in the upper weights (boasting a state champion and 3 state medal winners), so it was crucial for the Caissons’ lower and middle weights to get the job done … and they did.

In the nightcap match, the Caissons battled with military rival Hargrave. It was a seesaw battle with the teams tied at 24 all after first nine matches. Then, at 106 pounds, sophomore Logan Shiflett (Stuarts Draft, VA) gave the Caissons the lead for good by winning an 11-4 decision. From that point on, the Caissons never looked back. Fishburne pulled away with 4 pins to win it 51-34.

Jacob Fincham, Matthew Farrar (Waynesboro, VA), and Tyler Allen all remain unbeaten in conference matches.

Coach Terry Waters noted, “We wrestled hard, our youth showed at times, but the kids showed great determination to get the wins tonight”.

The Caissons are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Richmond to compete in the VISAA State Dual tournament at St. Christopher Academy.
