of the Best” (BoB) in April.

Of the 54 JROTC units in Virginia, only the top 6 programs earn a slot to compete for the title of “Best of the Best”. The field of competitors for this year consists of Landrum High School, Orange County High School, Pender County High School, Carroll County High School, Fishburne Military School, St. Paul High School, and Courtland High School .

Fishburne Military School is recognized as an Honor Unit with Distinction within US Army Cadet Command’s 4th Brigade which is headquartered at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. 4th Brigade is comprised of 318 Army JROTC programs in West Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the District of Columbia.

Late last week Fishburne’s JROTC Department received a letter from the United States Army Cadet Command’s 4th Brigade Headquarters stating: “Congratulations on being selected for this prestigious event! In accordance with the Brigade Commander’s guidance, this competition has been designed to be challenging and rewarding for all BoB teams; some events will be modified to enhance physical challenges, and to encourage critical thinking.”

Fishburne qualified for a BoB slot in November and has steadily been ramping up their training in anticipation of the intense competition.

The 2017 4th Brigade JROTC Raider Challenge Competition will be held at Magna Vista High School, 701 Magna Vista School Road, Ridgeway, VA  24148, on 22 April 2017.   The competition will consist of a Fitness Test, One-Rope Bridge, 5-km Road March, Litter Carry, and a Logistic Relay consisting of a HUMVEE pull, tire flip, water/ammo can carry and fireman carry.

Fishburne Military School’s Raiders have been a force to be reckoned with for years now and are hoping to top off another stellar season by bringing home the title of “Best of the Best”.


Fishburne Military School is the oldest and smallest of all military schools for boys in Virginia. Its college-prep curriculum is built upon the structure of an Army JROTC program. FMS is designated as a JROTC Honor Unit with Distinction and may nominate qualified candidates to the United States Service Academies.
