Fishburne postgrads knock off St. John’s, 81-64

Sheppard layupThe Fishburne Military School postgrad basketball team, currently ranked #2 in the nation in the NextUp Top 10, topped the Lancers of St. John’s Northwestern Military Academy 81-64 Monday night in Waynesboro.

Both teams came out slow, the Caissons (17-4) were able to capitalize on an early steal, a costly Lancers foul and a clutch three-pointer by Lamell Washington (Frederick, Md./Maryland-Baltimore County) to go up 20-13 with nine minutes remaining in the first period. Despite a tenacious defensive effort throughout the game, the Lancers would never get any closer. The Caissons finished the half with a 20-9 run, leaving them a 15-point lead to take into the locker room.

St. John’s came out for the second half determined make things tough for Fishburne. The defense of St. John’s pressed hard, forcing several crucial turnovers and cutting the Fishburne lead down to nine points with 16 minutes to play.

Both teams slogged it out for the next six minutes, trading steals and fouls on both sides of the court until Tre’ Harris (Glen Carbon, Ill./Kansas State) broke things open with a couple of key three-pointers.  The Lancers would continue to battle but were never able to reel in the Caissons.

Harris led the Caissons with 19 points, followed by Jordon Talley (Richmond, Va.) with 14 points.  Shamiek Sheppard (Brooklyn, N.Y.) contributed 13 points to the effort.
